Narratiive report, August 2022

August 2022 was a quieter month for breaking news resulting in total internet readership measured by Narratiive experiencing a -26% decline year-on-year and a -7% decline month-on-month in page views. The high web traffic seen in July 2021 from record online readership of news on national looting and continued interest in COVID-19 spilt over into August 2021. It is from this high base that we see the year-on-year decline in local internet readership for August 2022.

Overall, July 2022 was a relatively flat month with a slight -2% decline in total page views month-on-month. However, style & fashion and personal finance content saw an increase in page views of 14% and 11% respectively. Sports content also drew keen interest due to news on sports as Tour de France, Wimbledon and International Rugby series.

Narratiive report, October 2021

October 2021 internet traffic measured by Narratiive showed very steady figures with no month-on-month change in overall page views and a very slight -2% decline in total unique browsers. In contrast, year-on-year figures showed strong growth of 28% in page views but a -10% decline in unique browsers. Narratiive report, November 2021

Another stable month of internet readership as measured by Narratiive, with a slight month-on-month increase in both page view and unique browsers of 3% and 4% respectively. Year-on-year, however, saw a far more significant increase of 33% in page views but a slight (-3%) decline in unique browsers. The larger year-on-year increase in page views was driven by an increase in page views per unique browser, which increased from 11,57 in 2020 to 15,93 in 2021.

IAB US: Effect of internet economy on U.S. economy, new market creation and job growth

In the latest study commissioned by the IAB US to measure the economic value of the commercial internet, research has shown that the internet economy grew seven times faster than the total US economy during the last four years. It now accounts for 12 percent of the U.S. gross domestic product (GDP), has resulted in 17 million jobs being generated in the US – 7 million more than four years ago. Overall, there was a strong year on year growth in internet traffic measured by Narratiive, with 36% growth in page views and 2% growth in unique browsers. However, month on month, traffic saw a slight decline of -6% in page views and -5% in unique browsers. Narrative Report, August 2021

Overall readership across the IAB South Africa membership websites measured by Narratiive showed a 32% growth in page views year on year and 2% growth month on month. There was, however, a shift in interest of internet users from News and Politics (down by 16%) to Careers, Automotive and Tech & Computing. It is encouraging to see an overall increased interest in Careers which may be an early indicator of increased activity in the job market.

Overall internet readership measured by Narratiive saw a steady increase in page views for May 2021. An increase in page views generated per unique browser, as well as increased average visit duration, saw total page views increase by 11% month on month and 9% year on year.
